My Trek to ABC: A Journey That Changed Me Forever
I did not expect what I found on my trek to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). Each step led to a new landscape, new friendships, new and memorable experiences. From peaceful rhododendron forests to towering snow-covered peaks, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek was much more than a hiking adventure. It became a journey of self-discovery.
If you're still in any doubt about the ABC trek, my answer to that is a resounding YES! This hike is one of the most beautiful scenic, cultural and easy trekking experiences in Nepal.
This is a tale of my journey to ABC.
I choose this trek because I wanted to see the beautiful mountains of the Annapurna Range.
I kept binge watching all the content on Annapurna and of Nepal for months and months about the hike and what amazing experiences people talked about. Everest Base Camp was a place that I knew everyone said was amazing, but Annapurna Base Camp seemed more personal (and more varied). It abundant forests, traditional Gurung villages, waterfalls, rivers and stunning mountain vistas .

The area was also not too difficult, which made it good for the adventurous without the technical climbing.
I had enough motivation to pack my backpack when I could stand at the base of Annapurna I (8091 m) the 10th highest mountain in the world.
Preparing for the Adventure
Several weeks began the preparations before leaving. I've worked on my fitness by walking, climbing the stairs and doing some light cardio work.
Making informed packing was also crucial. My backpack included:
- Waterproof jacket
- Down jacket
- Thermal clothing
- Trekking poles
- Good hiking boots
- Water bottles
- Headlamp
- First aid kit
- Energy snacks
- Camera
- Power bank
I've learned a lot early on that it was easier to enjoy the ride when I wasn't carrying as much weight.
Day 1: Kathmandu to Pokhara
The trip to Pokhara from Kathmandu was a scenic start to the adventure. The ride kept going on the winding rivers and green hills, the more exciting the road went.
Pokhara was more comfortable than Kathmandu. The evening was spent walking along the edge of Phewa Lake and enjoying the reflection of the Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) in the lake.
The atmosphere was very peaceful and was an ideal start.
Day 2: The Trek has finally started!
The following morning we drove to the trailhead before embarking on the first day of our hike.
The scenic walk through lovely terraced farms, suspension bridges and small villages gave me a glimpse of one of the best trekking places in the world. The walking through beautiful terraced farms, suspension bridges and small villages made me realize why Nepal is considered as one of the best trekking places in the world.
Visit greeted by a smiley face, locals carry out their daily activity.
Everything felt authentic.
Walking Through Rhododendron Forests
I loved going through the rhododendron thicket areas.
I visited in the spring and there were lots of colorful flowers in the trails, bright red, pink and white.
The forest echoed Birdsong's voice and fresh mountain air made every breath refreshing.
The forests were magical very different from the high country rock faces.
In the beautiful villages along the trail
Each village was so special.
Overnight stays were not the only thing remembered at places such as Chhomrong, Bamboo, Dovan and Deurali.
Cotton houses, tea houses and most importantly, friendly people, made me feel at home.
Each evening was a highlight with fellow trekkers from other countries sharing conversations.
The Challenge of Climbing Higher
The area slowly picked up in elevation, and the terrain began to shift. Slowly green forests were replaced by rock formations, glaciers and alpine landscape. The air became thinner.
Going up hill was a challenge and it was important to breathe out regularly. Although it was convenient to be up high, I walked slowly, and drank lots of water to avoid serious discomfort.
This was a lesson that I learned, listening to my body rather than rushing to the destination.

Sunrise That Took My Breath Away
One morning before the sun rose I awoke.
When the first golden light fell on the snowy mountains, the whole region glistened with a rainbow of orange and pink hues.
It is one of the most peaceful moments of my life, to witness the sunrise on the three peaks of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre and stand quietly.
There's nothing like being there in person and feeling it.
Reaching Annapurna Base Camp
After several days of walking, I finally arrived at Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m.
It was a momentous occasion.
I was feeling really tiny and at home in nature, with the majestic Himalayas all around me.
The Annapurna Centre is indeed one of the most amazing places in Nepal.
The panoramic views encompassed:
- Annapurna I
- Annapurna South
- Annapurna III
- Gangapurna
- Hiunchuli
- Machhapuchhre
Feeling accomplished after days of hard work, standing there was like nothing I had felt before. The mountains were truly beautiful, but the people made the trip so memorable.
Throughout the trek, our guide explained some of the customs of the area, the traditions of the mountains, and the history of the Annapurna region.
Each day I was inspired by the amazing strength of the porters and their positive attitudes.
As we pushed our way up the steep inclines, we supported and motivated each other, we became friends, one will say family with fellow trekkers.
Being together, good memories were created.

Food on the Trail
It was a shock to discover the food.
Even though teahouses were in the mountains, they provided tasty and nourishing meals.
My favorites were some of these:
Dal Bhat
Vegetable fried rice
Tibetan bread
Garlic soup
Noodles
Pancakes
Hot lemon tea
However, my favorite was Dal Bhat, as it offered a never ending supply of energy for my long hikes, and unlimited refills.
The Hardest Part of the Trek
The hike from Deurali to the Base Camp of Machhapuchhre was the most demanding part.
The path got steeper, the weather chilled and each step was harder.
This was a challenge because of the dramatic mountain scenery, though.
When I got tired I would just look at the peaks around me and get the drive again.
Lessons I Learned During My Trek
I learned a lot more than hiking in the mountains on this trip.
I learned:
A patient spirit is better than haste.
Nature deserves respect.
Simplicity brings happiness.
All challenges are followed by a greener view.
Achievements happen when there is a small daily progress.
The journey made me realize the minimalist amount of things we require to be happy.
