Kongde Trekking: A Hidden Himalayan Adventure Above the Everest Region

Kongde Trekking: A Hidden Himalayan Adventure Above the Everest Region

AAnuska Devkota

Introduction

The Kongde Trekking in the Everest region of Nepal is a trek that's oft-so-overlooked, due to its distance away from other Everest Base Camp Trekking Routes that draw large crowds and foot traffic. The Kongde Trekking is situated entirely above the village of Namche Bazaar and provides breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and the other many mountains of the Himalayan Range. The trekkers who enjoy trekking in solitude, the luxury of staying in some of the finest mountain lodges, the experience of true Sherpa culture and the opportunity to see pristine and untouched natural beauty are going to find that the Kongde Trek is the perfect trekking experience.

Unlike the highly trafficked routes leading to Everest Base Camp, the Kongde Trek offers trekkers a more laid-back, tranquil and serene trekking experience away from foot traffic, and lots of pine forests, traditional Sherpa villages, alpine meadows and hiking along high ridges within the Himalayan mountains. The Kongde Trek combines adventure, culture and comfort, making it a fantastic trekking experience for both fitter and more physically capable experienced trekkers as well as more leisurely trekkers in search of a holiday in the Himalaya's.

Where is Kongde Located?

Kongde is a village that is located in the east of Solukhumbu district and is around 8000 ft (2438 m) high. It has stunning views of the Dudh Kosi Valley and is surrounded by three peaks of more than 20,000 ft (6096 m), with Kongde Ri being the tallest.

Like many other shorter treks departing from Kathmandu, most trekkers fly to Lukla and trek to Kongde after arriving at Namche Bazaar. Because Kongde and Namche Bazaar get much fewer trekkers than the very busy Everest Base Camp Trek that occurs each year, Kongde is an excellent choice for trekkers seeking a peaceful trekking experience in a quiet part of the Everest Region.

This is why Kongde gets so many fewer trekkers than the Everest Base Camp Trek – trekkers on their way to Kongde can experience hiking through pristine wilderness while at the same time experiencing a wholly unique perspective of the magnificent Himalayan Mountains compared to other trekkers who hike to Mount Everest.

Those who love photography of nature, romantic couples, people who are wellness tourists, or anyone wanting to have a unique and special experience in relation to the Himalayas should plan to take a trek to the region of Kongde.

Incredible Views of the Himalayas from the Kongde Region of Nepal

The Kongde Area has some of the most beautiful views of the mountains in Nepal. You will have some of the most amazing mountain views of:

- Everest

- Ama Dablam

- Lhotse

- Nuptse

- Thamserku

- Kangtega

- Khumbila

Both the sunrises and sunsets over Kongde are stunning. When the sun rises or sets, it paints the snow-covered mountains and allows clouds to move slowly across valleys below.

Beautiful & Unique Cultural Experiences with Sherpa People & Villages

The cultural influences of the Sherpa people and the Buddhist religion can be found throughout the communities along the way to Kongde. You’ll see the many communities made up of stone houses, prayer wheels, monasteries and brightly colored prayer flags as you make your way to Kongde.

The area around Kongde is home to many of the traditional Tibetan Buddhist Sherpas who have lived in this area for hundreds of years. The Sherpa people of the area are very friendly, and they are more than willing to share their culture, religion, and mountaineering traditions with visitors to the area around Kongde.

The tranquil monasteries and highland towns contribute to the overall experience of travel beyond just visual appeal, but also provide a wealth of culture along the way.

The Kongde Experience

The Kongde viewpoint areas are definitely a highlight of any trek in this region of the world since they provide an aerial-style perspective high over the valleys of the Everest region. The vantage point provides spectacular aerial views that are rarely obtained at lower altitudes while trekking.

On clear days, the entire range of the Himalayas in Everest can be seen all at once from this viewpoint. In addition to being rewarding in other ways, mornings are typically extremely rewarding due to the clean atmosphere and clear blue skies, allowing for the best possible photographs of the peaks, which, at such heights, can appear much larger and closer to the eye than can ordinarily be seen from lower altitudes.

Photographers have called the Kongde viewpoint one of the most secretive photography sites in all of Nepal because of its unique angles with regards to the Everest region.

Luxurious and Comfortable Accommodations in the Himalayas

Kongde continues to be a destination for those wanting to have luxury-type trekking experiences in Nepal. Some mountain lodges in this area provide comfortable room accommodations, warm dining facilities, excellent food service and exceptional hospitality, as well as having spectacular views of the Himalayas.

Unlike more basic teahouse style traveller destinations, Kongde represents an exclusive type of trekking in the mountain region. This type of experience allows for relaxation, while enjoying the breathtaking views from the mountain lodge rooms and terraces.

This combination of wilderness and comfort makes Kongde ideal for honeymoon treks, wellness retreats, and premium Himalayan adventures.

Best Time for Kongde Trekking

Spring Season (March to May)

The spring season is a fantastic period to trek in Kongde; the weather is typically fairly stable with decent temperatures and rhododendron forests in full bloom over the hills. Excellent weather means excellent views on the mountains.

Trekkers want to explore lush green hills and see flowers of many different colors.

Peak trekking season in Nepal is autumn (September- November). The clear skies after the monsoon season yield incredible views of the mountains and support dry conditions for trekking.

Autumn is great for photography, and it provides terrific long-distance panoramas of the Himalayas. The pleasant temperatures also give trekkers access to well-maintained trails.

What about trekking in Kongde during winter (December-February)? Winter trekking in Kongde is available for those that want to experience the tranquility of snow-covered countryside.
