Manaslu Tsum Valley Trekking
Embark on the ultimate Himalayan adventure with the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, an extraordinary journey through two of Nepal's most remote and culturally rich regions. Combining the spectacular Manaslu Circuit Trek with the mystical Tsum Valley, this unforgettable expedition takes you deep into untouched mountain landscapes, ancient Tibetan Buddhist villages, sacred monasteries, and across the breathtaking Larkya La Pass (5,106 m).
Located in the restricted Manaslu Conservation Area, the Tsum Valley remained isolated from the outside world until 2008. Known as the "Hidden Valley of Happiness," it has preserved its unique Tibetan Buddhist culture, centuries-old traditions, and pristine natural environment. This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience far from Nepal's busier trekking routes.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola before following the Budhi Gandaki River through lush forests, cascading waterfalls, suspension bridges, and charming Gurung villages. At Lokpa, the trail branches off into the secluded Tsum Valley, where dramatic landscapes and traditional stone villages reveal a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
As you explore the Tsum Valley, you'll visit peaceful villages such as Chumling, Chhokang Paro, Nile, and Mu Gompa, the highest and most important monastery in the valley. Ancient monasteries, mani walls, prayer wheels, chortens, and colorful prayer flags line the trail, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. The warm hospitality of the local Tsumba people offers a unique opportunity to experience authentic Himalayan culture and Buddhist traditions.
Surrounded by magnificent peaks including Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, Boudha Himal, and Himalchuli, the Tsum Valley offers breathtaking scenery and outstanding opportunities for photography, meditation, and cultural exploration.
After exploring the hidden valley, the route rejoins the classic Manaslu Circuit, leading through the beautiful villages of Sama Gaun and Samdo. Spend an acclimatization day in Sama Gaun with the option to hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m) or the stunning Birendra Lake, a glacial lake beneath the towering Manaslu Glacier.
The adventure reaches its highest point at the magnificent Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), one of Nepal's most spectacular mountain passes. Crossing the pass rewards trekkers with panoramic views of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Cheo Himal, Annapurna II, Larkya Peak, and numerous snow-covered Himalayan giants.
The Manaslu Conservation Area is also one of Nepal's richest biodiversity hotspots, home to rare wildlife such as the snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, musk deer, and over 200 species of birds. Throughout the trek, you'll walk through dense rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and pristine mountain wilderness.
Because both the Manaslu and Tsum Valley regions are restricted areas, the trails remain peaceful and uncrowded, offering one of the most authentic trekking experiences in the Himalayas. This challenging trek is best suited for trekkers with good physical fitness and a passion for adventure, culture, and high-altitude trekking.

More Information
Weather Guide
The best seasons for the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Autumn generally offers the clearest skies and most stable conditions, while spring brings warmer days and beautiful rhododendron blooms.
Spring: March to May
March: Cool with possible snow around Larkya La; higher sections can still be wintry.
April: One of the best months, with clear mornings, moderate temperatures and rhododendrons in bloom.
May: Generally warm and pleasant, although afternoon clouds and pre-monsoon showers become more likely toward the end of the month.
Autumn: September to November
September: Conditions improve after the monsoon, although early September can still be wet.
October: Usually the best month for clear skies, mountain views and stable trail conditions.
November: Excellent visibility but progressively colder nights and higher chances of snow around the pass later in the month.
Winter: December to February
Winter brings very cold temperatures and snow at higher elevations. Larkya La can become difficult or impassable after heavy snowfall, and some high-altitude lodges may have limited services. Winter trekking should only be considered by experienced trekkers with appropriate equipment and flexible itineraries.
Monsoon: June to August
The lower Budhi Gandaki section receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon. Trails can become muddy and slippery, while landslides and road disruptions may affect transportation. Cloud cover also significantly reduces mountain visibility. For the combined Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley route, this is generally not recommended.
Important: Mountain weather is unpredictable. Temperatures vary greatly between the lower valleys and high-altitude sections, so your equipment should be suitable for both warm daytime walking and freezing conditions at higher elevations.

Safety Guide
1. Take Altitude Seriously
Altitude is one of the main challenges on the combined Manaslu Tsum Valley route. The itinerary should allow your body sufficient time to adjust as you ascend.
Common symptoms of mild altitude sickness include:
Headache
Loss of appetite
Tiredness
Dizziness
Nausea
Difficulty sleeping
Never ignore worsening symptoms. If symptoms become severe or continue to worsen, tell your guide immediately. The safest treatment for serious altitude illness is descent.
2. Follow Your Guide's Advice
The Manaslu and Tsum Valley areas are restricted trekking regions where licensed guide accompaniment is required, and the route is remote compared with Nepal's more developed trekking areas.
Your guide monitors:
Weather and trail conditions
Altitude-related symptoms
Walking pace
Accommodation availability
Pass conditions
Local trail information
Emergency arrangements
Always follow the guide's instructions, particularly before crossing Larkya La.
3. Larkya La Pass
For itineraries crossing the Manaslu Circuit, Larkya La is the highest and one of the most demanding sections, at approximately 5,100-5,160 m depending on the reference point used.
The crossing involves:
An early morning start
Cold and potentially strong winds
Snow or ice depending on the season
Long hours of walking
Rapidly changing weather
The crossing should only be attempted when your guide considers the conditions safe. Start times may be adjusted according to weather, snow and trail conditions.
4. Protect Yourself From the Sun
UV exposure is much stronger at high altitude. Wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen regularly, even on cloudy days. A hat and neck covering are also useful.
5. Stay Hydrated
Drink regularly throughout the day. Dehydration can make trekking more difficult and may worsen headaches and fatigue. Carry enough water and use a reliable purification method when necessary.
6. Be Careful on Remote Trails
Some sections of the Manaslu route are narrow, rocky, steep or exposed. During rain or snow, trails can become slippery.
Walk at a steady pace.
Keep a safe distance from the edge of steep trails.
Use trekking poles where helpful.
Do not rush downhill.
Follow your guide through exposed sections.
Take extra care around suspension bridges and river crossings.
7. Weather & Emergency Flexibility
Weather can affect transportation, accommodation, trail conditions and high-pass crossings. Keep some flexibility in your schedule and avoid planning tight connections immediately after the trek.
Our guides continuously assess local conditions and may modify the itinerary when necessary for safety.
8. Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your policy should specifically cover high-altitude trekking at the maximum elevation of your itinerary, emergency medical treatment and helicopter evacuation where applicable.
Check the altitude limit and exclusions carefully before travelling.
Final Preparation
The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is remote and physically demanding, but proper preparation makes it a safe and rewarding Himalayan adventure.
Train before your trek, pack for changing weather, walk slowly at altitude, stay hydrated, listen to your guide and never continue upward when you are seriously unwell.
At Happy Mountain Nepal, our guides monitor weather, trail and altitude conditions throughout the journey and make necessary adjustments with your safety as the priority.
